3 reasons this year’s Oscars was a complete mess

I’ve often wondered what would happen if that pesky Oscars incidental music didn’t play winners off the stage as their speeches lost focus and got mixed up. You know the exercise by now. A passionate winner, overwhelmed by emotion, has to hurry through a touching homage as the music swells “off the stage”. The 93rd Academy Awards did away with that, leaving us with a litany of endless speeches that may have come from the heart but too often had no discernible point. Musicians, editors, documentary filmmakers, and cameramen thanked childhood teachers, got overly political (or joked about how political the show felt), and often got lost. Very cute to her, but brutal for an audience watching from their home.
