Good Trouble EP on Gael’s Bombshell, [Spoiler]Return and more twists
Warning: The following contains spoilers for Wednesday Good problem Final. Proceed at your own risk!
The Good Trouble mid-season finale caused a big surprise to a resident of the coterie: Gael’s one-off date Isabella is pregnant with his baby!
And that was hardly the only major development in Wednesday’s episode: Dennis returned to tell Davia she was his light and was greeted in her robe by the sight of her new friend Matt; The Fight Club girls wanted to sue Evan for workplace harassment in order to get the money for their app, and got Mariana to finally reveal that she’s dating her ex-boss. Callie discovered that Kathleen was involved in the disappearance of a witness. Tired of playing the stereotypical game, Alice moved away from comedy diversity. and Malika said goodbye to Dyonte to prove her love to Isaac, who stated he needed a break.
Now, take a moment to recover from all of these revelations before diving into our chat with showrunner Joanna Johnson breaking down the final twists and turns and previewing the upcoming season 3.
TVLINE | The show covers many issues that affect people entering adulthood: work, relationships, financial responsibility. Was the Gael twist a chance to go a step further and explore parenting?
Yes, in any case. Just what interests me is the idea of what happens when you are not in a relationship with the person you are going to have a baby with and how you deal with it and how you talk about the future? It’s so complicated and most of all [with] someone you barely know. So I thought this would be really interesting to explore. And for her age, when you have no money, when you don’t know how to take care of a child, it’s just very overwhelming.
TVLINE | Is the baby definitely Gael? No question?
Well I guess you just have to wait and see. [Laughs]
TVLINE | Isabella doesn’t have the best track record to be trustworthy.
I’m not ruling anything out, let’s put it that way.
TVLINE | Gael is quite shocked by the news, of course, but how does he take it as he moves forward?
It’s hard for him to really accept … I think he judges himself too. He’s tough on himself. Why wasn’t he more careful? Why did he let that happen? How will his family react? He comes from a Catholic family that is pretty conservative. There are these things to think about and how will taking responsibility for them change your life? What does he have to do? He’s the kind of guy who is really very conscientious and thinks about others and thinks about consequences. So he’s not the type of guy who says, “Oh, whatever, we’re going to find out.” He takes these things really seriously.
TVLINE | Callie and Gael really started moving closer to each other again this season. Where are they at this turn in pregnancy?
It certainly dampens the fact that they were trying to find each other again. Callie wondered if she picked the wrong one when she picked Jamie, and Gael has also wrestled with the fact that he was really hurt when she picked Jamie and he wants to get used to it again to possibly get hurt? They both dance around each other a bit this way. But that chemistry that they always had is there.
TVLINE | Does the baby message affect what Callie wants to do to maybe get back together with Gael? That’s a lot of extra baggage to take with you.
It will definitely have an impact on the next steps [and] definitely affect their relationship, which we’ll be looking at for the next half of the season.
TVLINE | How does Davia feel when Dennis is back? Is it safe to say she isn’t ready to just forgive him and end Matt?
I think in this scene she’s a little annoyed with Dennis, like, “Oh, this is where you stroll back in. You left unannounced, and here you go back unannounced.” She is still very hurt, but she also has very strong feelings for him. You have this story and this chemistry. She will definitely be confused about what to do.
TVLINE | Will Dennis move back to the attic?
Yeah, he definitely came back, at least for the moment.
TVLINE | Speaking of love triangles: Has Malika gone from possibly two friends to no friend?
It kind of looks like it doesn’t it? [Laughs] She took a great opportunity and told Isaac that she is Poly and that she wants to continue that relationship with Dyonte. She wasn’t prepared for Isaac to say he needed a break and take off. It’s pretty hard for them. It definitely fluctuates from it.
TVLINE | Was polyamory specific only to her feelings for Dyonte, or is it something she would like to explore more broadly in the future?
I think it’s something she’d like to explore in general. But polyamorous people are often willing to be monogamous when they are with someone who is feeling really strong. Somehow it is there. She says to Isaac, “I don’t want to lose you,” “so I’m not going to explore this thing.” But his point of view is, “But you will,” and knowing that, it’s hard to just ignore.
TVLINE | Finally everything between Mariana and the Fight Club Girls is on the table. How will that affect your business?
That was a big revelation for Mariana because she really kept a secret from them for so long. It will be interesting to see how they react to that. It’s a pretty big betrayal in their friendship.
TVLINE | Does Mariana consider their relationship when she hears the things they say about Evan?
There are certain things about Evan that Mariana made excuses for. She has to look at how long she can separate the professional from the personal. She’s doing something Callie couldn’t do with Jamie. If they had a major ethical disagreement, Callie had to split up [with him]while Mariana was more likely to say, “Well, I can understand his side and his point of view,” but how long?
TVLINE | Kathleen asks Callie to be her lawyer and Callie doesn’t actually say anything, but she sits down so I don’t know if that was a silent agreement.
You have such an interesting relationship. Callie goes back and forth about whether she can trust Kathleen, but there is this type of mentoring, and they’ve gotten a little closer this year, sharing about their mothers. And you know Callie, she loves an outsider. She can’t resist.
TVLINE | Is she a little concerned because the stuff Jamie tells her about Kathleen is pretty serious and very dangerous if it’s true?
I am not sure if she believes any of this. I think she feels she knows Kathleen enough to know that Kathleen would not be involved in the murder of a witness. That seems to go a long way. But she is ready enough to listen to it. That’s why she sits. She is ready enough to listen to them and very curious to hear them.
TVLINE | Alice left her comedy case. Is that the end of this particular story for you, or will you visit the Talent Showcase again during the next half of the season?
We’re not done with this story yet. There is still a lot to discover in this area and in this history. But Alice certainly broke up with the group.
