Has, as I met your father, already ruled out a possible attachment to HIMYM?

Who is your papi Or more precisely, who is Sophie’s baby daddy? That’s the million dollar question that may or may not take nine seasons to answer.

Shortly after Wednesday’s announcement that Hulu had ordered the Hilary Duff-led follow-up to How I Met Your Mother, fans began speculating on how the new show would be tied – if at all – to its predecessor. Is it really a spin-off or more of a kindred spirit?

A connective tissue could concern the title father. As many fans have already pointed out, Barney welcomed a child into the world at the finale of HIMYM’s time-hopping series – and the mother’s identity was never revealed.

There’s only one problem with this theory: Barney had a daughter named Ellie. HIMYF is set in the near future when Sophie tells her son the story of how she met his father.

Before we let the barnacle run away and not celebrate Father’s Day with his best brothers, we should point out that another illegitimate Stinson is certainly within the realm of possibility. After all, this is the same man who made his 200th sexual conquest. And it was something of a running joke that Barney probably fathered his fair share of kids. (Remember when Lily thought she was pregnant in season 6 and Barney jumped up from his chair and announced, “I’ve never seen this woman in my life,” out of habit?)

While the father’s identity is likely to be kept under wraps for some time, we know the following about HIMYF: The first 10-episode season catapults us, according to protocol, “back to the year 2021, when she and Sophie were closely connected to a group of friends is just about to find out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and unlimited possibilities. “The sequel was created by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger (This Is Us) and executive produced by original series creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays. It combines elements of multiple and a camera to create an appearance similar to the original CBS comedy.

Do you think there’s a chance – even the slightest – that Barney will turn out to be the father? Or do you think HIMYF will find other ways to tie in with the original series? Write your thoughts in a comment below.
