Her EDM premiere: The ultimate chapter of the sound in Noise’s epic LP ‘Shapes’ is about to be launched, nevertheless it’s only the start [RAM]
Sound In Noise (SIN) first track on RAM was a retro liquid jam on the label’s 2017 annual compilation with promising new artists and sickly upcoming releases. From then on, SIN seemed to be aiming for RAM (or maybe the other way around) so it was only a matter of time before he was signed for his own solo track release after four more tracks on comp albums in 2018. “Ping Pong” showed how his style developed into a heavy dance floor atmosphere that an album of its own more than deserved.
Cut until: 2019 when Shapes, Sound In Noise’s debut album, was announced. It was supposed to be released in parts (a completely different format at the time, especially for a debut), and Shapes Part 1 impressed the D&B world with its diversity, understanding of the genre’s history and the amalgamation of subgenres. Every track in the Shapes series was a surprise and stylistically it ranges from dark and technical, borders on neurofunk to ameny retro jungle vibes to the ultimate vocal rave vibes. It was a zigzag of a sonic journey in the best possible way and now that the entire album will be released on Friday November 27th, the journey ends with loads of heavy dance floor vibes and introspective, heartbreaking melodies.
There are four tracks in this final part including our premiere of the title track today. “Touch” has a very late ’00s dance floor neuro vibe and is so gritty and technical that it almost sounds like it’s going to get industrial in the intro. “Nights Like This” feat. Daniel Levi has a great, cinematic, big room sound that must have been a pain in the ass to create the sound. Getting all of those big notes and Echoey Vox to sound as clean as they are is no easy task.
Part 4 goes back to over-technical vibes for “Expert Killer”, both in the neurofunk sense and in the German techno sense, before moving on to the title track. The title track features Marie on vocals and is for sure the most melodic and emotionally charged track in this chapter of Shapes, possibly even on the entire album. Sound In Noise had a very specific vision for this track:
For the track “Shapes” I produced the music while Marie wrote the lyrics. It is based on a painting by Anu Muiste that is sold with the album. The painting is called “The Change”. Working with Marie speaks of dark shapes and thoughts that are depicted both in the album’s artwork and in the painting on which the title track is based. It’s about how other people around you may not see these dark thoughts and times that you are going through.
Well said sir. It’s another case of art that inspires art, and knowing that SIN and Marie wanted to make music to express this extraordinary painting makes it all the more poignant. Not to mention the “changes” and “shape shifts” we are experiencing together these days.
Shapes is truly a groundbreaking album for Sound In Noise, and its title track could also be a career defining for the shockingly mature artist who is incredibly new to being stared at. It’s a perfect addition to the album that will close a chapter for Sound In Noise, but will likely open countless new volumes as well.
