Legends boss at the exit of Dominic Purcell: “Everyone needs a break”
Legends of Tomorrow co-showrunner Phil Klemmer understands star Dominic Purcell’s need to step away from the CW series.
In April Purcell announced via Instagram that he will not return as a regular series in the previously announced seventh season – but he will “come back regularly” as part of a handshake deal with Klemmer.
“The deal is still ongoing. I’m not interested, “wrote Purcell in one version of the Instagram post. “[Whatever] They throw cash at company level. I’m leaving @cw_legendsoftomorrow. Bringing @dccomics icon #heatwave (aka) MICK RORY to life was a total pleasure and humbling experience. I smashed that character – no actor in the world could have done it better. “
In a now deleted portion of his original caption, Purcell added, “The studio doesn’t care. The actors[‘] Work ethic and talent must give them the confidence to question authority. Much love to everyone. I don’t lose how happy I am. “
When asked where things stand with the actor and the future of his character Mick Rory, Klemmer says with a laugh to TVLine: “I think [Dominic] summed it up pretty well – not with his first post, but with his later posts. “
“I think everyone just needs a break from the show, including me,” continues Klemmer, “and even when people leave the Waverider, there is always a seat free for people to come back. I’m looking forward to having him on the show next season. “
This current season, the abduction of Captain Sara Lance by aliens and the subsequent absence on the Waverider will hit her colleagues in the OG team particularly hard. As the two remaining legends from the original Rip Hunter crew, “Mick really relied on the stability Sara provided in his life,” says Klemmer. Since the blonde is very, very far away, “he goes back to old Mick, who is obviously a powder keg.”
Legends of Tomorrow will air Sundays at 8/7c on The CW.
