NCIS Recap: A Blast within the Previous – and Why? [Spoiler] Shoot McGee ?!
CBS ‘NCIS opened season 18 with a shocking bang (or two) before hitting “rewind” to take us back to a year – and stay there. Do you enjoy the time jump?
After a cold, in which McGee switched off a private jet while taxiing in order to be shot not just once (in the arm) but twice (in the leg) by the hidden sniper Gibbs (!!), the opening credits led to a series of flashbacks. There was the season 16 finale, in which a concerned Fornell pulled a gun on a doctor when OD daughter Emily was holding onto a thread; a scene in October 2019 in which Gibbs shook off McGee’s lead at the supplier of the opioids that nearly killed Emily and said Fornell “moved on”; and then the November 2019 episode “Musical Chairs,” in which Gibbs suddenly went to fish for sturgeon (but to really help Fornell after Emily left rehab) and later reappeared with a mysterious glow.
The rest of the episode (and the next ones that will follow) was taped from there in November 2019 when Gibbs met with Fornell, who said that while this opioid nightmare was behind Emily, it is not over for her. Rather, Fornell has a reference to a red-haired “errand boy” named Josh, who may lead her to the “head of the snake” who trades the dangerous, counterfeit opioids.
The gentlemen are staking out a medical clinic in a mall, and while Fornell tries to chase down a “little fish” they see to deliver drugs, Gibbs reminds him to stick to the bigger plan and point out the errand boy Josh to wait and then follow him. Fornell gets nervous, however, and ducks into the shady clinic where the age of a girl Emily’s age triggers him. Gibbs arrives to claim his confused “Uncle Ed” and is pounded in the eye by a persistent Fornell during the extraction.
We then fit in perfectly with the end of “Musical Chairs” when Gibbs comes to the Navy band’s concert with his bruised forehead. Then the subject shifts outside to Jimmy Palmer and the misplaced body of a Marine Corporal Richard Darby. After informing Gibbs, Jimmy makes his way back to the office to meet up with his night shift colleague Ronnie Tyler when the chirping of his van lock triggers a bomb! As Jimmy recovers from being overwhelmed by the explosion, Gibbs announces that he is assigning him and Tyler (who is, among other things, a kind of family friend of Vance’s) a protective detail.
While Torres and Bishop Darby track down Doomsday Prepper’s RV and speak to two nosy neighbors, McGee reports that Agent Tyler sent her protection detail home. When Tyler is caught trying to be a villain, he explains to Gibbs & Co. that a masked man broke into their home and held their daughter Jasmine at gunpoint to take the child away until Tyler Darby’s right hand was a 3- Clock drops at the park. The NCIS team makes sure Tyler drops a cheating hand, but when the kidnapper (posing as a nearby hobo) is spooked, a car chase ensues … and Torres accidentally steers the suspect into the front fender of a speeding truck .
Upon reaching that impasse, the team discovers that the disguised kidnapper was one of Darby’s curious neighbors who got wind of the Doomsday Prepper’s $ 160,000 savings. As such, the neighbor killed Darby and tried to open a safe in the motor home with his hand. And under the mobile home, under a trap door, they find Tyler’s gagged daughter.
As a result, Gibbs declines a drink with Jack and then checks into Fornell – who found the errand boy Josh, who slumped dead in a car. After Fornell has already called the police, he pulls a key out of Josh’s pocket and tells Gibbs to “come over to see me in two weeks” and insist, “Everything will make sense. Trust me. “
