One Night time in Miami Trailer: Regina King makes her directorial debut on Amazon
We have the first trailer for One night in Miami. Amazon releases the film, which is Oscar-winning Regina King’s directorial debut (If Beale Street Could Talk, Watchmen). There is clear hope that this will be a favorite of the awards season and it’s easy to see why. It is based on the award-winning song of the same name by Kemp Powers. There are also symbols such as Malcolm X, Sam Cooke, Jim Brown and Muhamed Ali that cross on a fateful night. According to the studio, it is “a fictional report inspired by the historic night these four formidable characters spent together”. As we can see, history and fiction make a good mix in this case.
The trailer shows us Cassius Clay (Eli Goree), Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.) and Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge) gathering for the celebration. Cassius has just become the heavyweight world champion, and that’s more than enough reason for her to spend the night on the town. We get little glimpses of the respective symbols that do what they do best, be it boxing, soccer, singing or inspiring cultural changes. While this is a fictional representation of the night in question, it appears to be an authentic look at each of these legendary characters.
The cast also includes Joaquina Kalukango (Chained for Life), Nicolette Robinson (The Affair), Beau Bridges (The Fabulous Baker Boys) and Lance Reddick (John Wick). Kemp Powers wrote the script. The film is produced by Jess Wu Calder, Keith Calder and Jody Klein. Amazon acquired the worldwide rights to the film back in July, signaling that they have a lot of confidence in what Regina King has achieved behind the camera. Regina King has played a role in front of the screen for the past few years. King has four Emmy wins and five nominations for her name since 2015, along with her 2019 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Now she is expanding the scope of her accomplishments.
One Night in Miami revolves around an incredible night in 1964 when four sports, music and activism icons gathered to celebrate one of the biggest surprises in boxing history. When underdog Cassius Clay, who would soon be named Muhammad Ali (Eli Goree), beats heavyweight champion Sonny Liston at the Miami Convention Hall, Clay celebrated the event with three of his friends: Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.) and Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge). The film “explores the struggles these men faced and the crucial roles they each played in the civil rights movement and cultural upheaval of the 1960s.”
Amazon intends to give the film an award-winning theatrical release starting next month. One Night in Miami will hit select theaters for the first time on Christmas Day, December 25th. It will then arrive for Prime Video subscribers on January 15, 2021. Check out the new trailer on the Amazon Prime Video YouTube channel.
