Both Wonder Woman and Superman represent a more serious period in the history of superhero storytelling. At the time, Batman was one of the rare “darker” heroes who was forced to fight crime after his parents were murdered. A couple of decades later, fans were also introduced to a character like Spider-Man who (although he was really decent) also had a penchant for his character, as he was encouraged to fight crime due to his uncle’s death. Remember, Patty Jenkins doesn’t poof-poof other heroes, but she makes a valid point in that both Wonder Woman and Superman fit this old-fashioned superhero form.
