RuPaul’s Drag Race Finale Throwback: Did the Right Queen Win Season 13?
After 16 weeks (or was it 16 months?) Of tough competition, the final of the RuPaul Drag Race closed the book on Friday about one of the most twisted seasons in history.
Friday’s main event is a marked improvement over last season’s purely virtual final, although it’s not quite the spectacle fans have gotten used to yet. Our top 4 – Gottmik, Kandy Muse, Rose and Symone – compete against each other for the crown.
On the way to the long-awaited coronation, 44 percent of TVLine readers expected the night to end with Symone as America’s next drag superstar, followed by Gottmik (31 percent) and Rosé (22 percent). With regard to Miss Congeniality, most readers assumed that Olivia Lux would receive honor.
The night began with Grande Dame RuPaul performing “New Friends Silver, Old Friends Gold” which raised the bar. The top 4 adorned the stage for one last runway, a drag ball, and showed their best fashion in the categories “Black and White”, “Red Everywhere” and “Grand Finale Eleganza Extravaganza”. Touchingly, the finale was also a heartfelt tribute to Chi Chi DeVayne, who passed away in August.
A Britney Spears-themed final four-lip dubbing began with Rose and Kandy Muse facing the melody of “Work B – ch”. This also gave us the first obliteration of the night when Ru Rose flew away.
On the second lip-sync, Symone took on Gottmik in a fierce battle against Britney’s “Gimme More”. It was a close call, but Symone was declared the winner and Gottmik was kicked out of the competition.
And that’s exactly how we were Kandy Muse and Symone as the last two queens of season 13. Her fate was ultimately determined by Britney’s “Till the World Ends”, a wild fight in which both competitors had to leave everything on stage.
When the dust and glitter had settled, RuPaul made the big announcement: The season 13 winner is… Symone!
(As for Miss Congeniality, that honor was indeed bestowed on LaLa Ri. May she reign long.)
